Wewey Wita is world famous for a lighting fast sidekick done to her opponent at the 2018 Belgium Open Pencak Silat tournament. The video of her kicking down her opponent went viral and was shared millions of time including by ESPN. (See video below)
Born February 13, 1993 in Tangerang, a city in the province of Banten, Indonesia, Wewey grew up in Bandung. Her real name is Yo Chu Wey, which means “number one”. When she entered elementary school she used the name Wewey Wita which she is known by today.
Wewey started studying martial arts in 5th grade elementary school. Initially her parents did not approve of it as they preferred their daughter to attend courses and modeling competitions. Wewey chose to continue to practice martial arts in secret. Her parents finally found out, after she came home carrying a trophy. Her parents finally no longer questioned her choice after she proved able to compete in the sport of her choice.
In the international arena, her achievements are quite outstanding. She was a world champion in 2012 and 2015. Winning the SEA Games however, took some time. She failed twice to win gold, but finally succeeded at the 2017 SEA Games, in class B 50-55 kilograms.
She has won gold in Tanding at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. The 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta–Palembang 2018, was a continental multi-sport event that was held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang. She is married to Denny Aprisani, a former Pencak Silat athlete for Indonesia. They recently had their first child Melviano Aziel Shakeil. The son nicknamed “Bang Zeil” was born on on January 30th, 2021
