The Padepokan Pencak Silat TMII in Jakarta, Indonesia is a complex built to promote and host large events celebrating Pencak Silat. It includes a library, training rooms, stadium, hotel, restaurant, and other facilities. It was constructed between 1994 and 1996 and officially inaugurated by President Suharto in 1997.
The Padepokan has hosted several World Pencak Silat Championships as well as other national and international Pencak Silat competitions. Built with the necessary facilities to host events and competitions, the complex serves as a reminder of Silat’s traditional roots and training methods, as it is located next to the Taman Mini “Indonesia Indah” cultural recreational area in East Jakarta.
Historically, Silat was not practiced in a dedicated martial arts building or “dojo” like in karate. Instead, it was practiced in villages, usually outside and at night. Village buildings were typically composed of simple buildings, including the teacher’s residence, and often had agricultural land nearby.
The Japanese constructed the first purpose-built dojo in Tokyo in 1936, marking a significant change in the way karate were trained and taught. The Padepokan Pencak Silat in Jakarta represents a similar shift in Pencak Silat’s training and teaching methods.
Today, many Silat practitioners still train in any available location, such as parks, backyards, or rice fields. There is also a difference between a member (anggota) of a Silat organization and a student (murid). In the past, Silat was passed down from master to student in a holistic manner, teaching not only martial arts but also manners, customs, religious principles, and etiquette. As modern Silat schools have grown, the one-on-one relationship with the master and holistic approach have diminished.
As membership increased, so did the need for larger facilities. Similar training centers can be found in Indonesia and Malaysia for various Silat schools such as the Padepokan for Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate (PSHT) in Madiun, Padepokan Perisai Diri in Solo Raya, and Merpati Putih in Cabang, Cirebon.
The Padepokan Pencak Silat in Jakarta represents a modern evolution of Silat while preserving its traditional roots. It serves as a dedicated training center and promotes the traditional culture of Pencak Silat while catering to the needs of a fast-growing sport.
