Where Tradition Meets Competition, and Warriors Are Forged
The USA Pencak Silat Federation (UPSF) held the 2025 Pencak Silat Tanding Tournament on February 23rd, a thrilling showcase of martial arts excellence. Held in a spacious venue in Herndon, the event featured two fully equipped arenas, each managed by experienced judges and digital scoring systems (using PERSILAT Ruleset) to ensure fairness and precision in every match.
With around 150 attendees, including over 80 competitors across multiple divisions, the tournament brought together Silat practitioners from various schools and states, some traveling as far as Boston, Massachusetts, to participate. The tournament truly reflected the growing strength and unity of the Pencak Silat community in the United States.

Standout Competitors and Champions
Among the many skilled athletes who graced the competition mats, two competitors stood out for their outstanding
performances:
- Best Male Competitor: Charles Koprowski (Class A – Pre Junior) from Williamsburg Dojo
- Best Female Competitor: Zhinzi Ottley (Class E – Adults 18 & up) from Silat Academy, Maryland
Their exceptional skill, strategy, and perseverance throughout the tournament earned them well-deserved recognition.
Special Guests and Memorable Moments

The event was honored by several distinguished guests, further elevating the tournament’s significance. Kak Wona Sumantri, a respected figure in the Silat world, opened the tournament with a mesmerizing Kembangan (artistic Silat movements) performance before striking the gong, marking the official start of the competition.
Other special guests included:
- Master John Chung from the World Cup Martial Arts Association
- Andrena Brown, wife of the legendary Master Dennis Brown and organizer of the USA Capitol Classics
Their presence highlighted the strong connections between Silat and the broader martial arts community.

No Silat gathering is complete without a celebration of Indonesian culture, and the 2025 Tanding Tournament was no exception. Attendees were treated to delicious Indonesian cuisine, catered by Bela Widi from Citarasa, adding a rich culinary experience to an already vibrant event.
